Thanks Roman,
You're right, with my ubuntu/debian laptop it works (just slow... I should
use my new paycheck for some RAM).  My desktop uses gentoo and it seems like
the same version as my laptop.  Now at least it's not giving e the
pkg-config error but still the compile error.  Anyway, I'll keep trying
things and post if I have sucess.
