QTDIR should be the directory where 'includes', 'lib', 'mkspecs' and 'bin'
directories for qt live.
Type:
locate 'mkspecs'

No. It should be compiled as a framework.

It works for us. Which dmg are you installing?

I don't recommend to recompile qt. It takes so long and the standard packages
on the web should work out the box.
