Interesting discussion going on in the MIR list comparing Sonic 
Visualizer and Marsyas. Just in case anybody cares to jump in and "sell" 
the Annotator and CLAM ;-)

Hello music experts,

I like Sonic Visualiser as it has some practical value as it offers already
a nice GUI for even those who are not experts on certain "audio analytic
fields" like e.g. audio feature extraction and classification. Maybe Marsyas
is also useful but not having any useful starter help for beginners of
"automated sound analysis" it is a big obstacle supporting non-use of
Marsyas, at least here in my case.

For example I am still looking for an automatic method of analyzing a set of
one-shot samples (.wav, mono or stereo, 44.1kHz, 16bit) each having a length
between 0.4s and 4s, mainly using for drums or rhythmic elements in
samplers. My dream application would have following features:

1.  Analyzing each sample and writing it's characteristic features into
separate human eye readable .txt or .csv files in the same directory as the
original sample is.

2.  Doing a similarity analysis based on those extracted features, optimized
for such short one-shot samples.

3.  Visualization of (mainly timbre and energy flow) similarity somehow in a
2D or 3D space.

4.  Offering interactivity in that visualization like filtering based on
various input parameters. Filtering could look similar as the auto-filter
options available in Excel.

5.  Being able to download the deliverables or some executable files (.exe
or .jar) rather than being a hidden scientific project from public access.


How much could e.g. Marsyas support from my listed 5 points above? Any other
solutions and tips are of course also welcome. Thanks in advance.
