If you try to run SMSTools by clicking on the icon, and it fails, what
does the console log say?

(Go to Applications/Utilities/Console and choose "Open Console Log.."
from the File menu)

and the file <UserDir>/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/SMSTools.crash.log 
?
